Song Lyric Sunday — Just the Two of Us Happy Together

- Posted in Uncategorized by

When I first saw the theme words Jim Adams picked out — couple, together, and us — for today’s Song Lyric Sunday, two songs came to mind, “Happy Together” by the Turtles and “Just the Two of Us” by Bill Withers. I decided to go with the Bill Withers song, in honor of Withers, who passed away earlier this year.

“Just the Two of Us” was written by Bill Withers, Grover Washington, Jr., William Salter, and Ralph MacDonald, and recorded by both Grover Washington Jr. and Bill Withers. It was released in February 1981. The song was a collaboration between jazz saxophone player Grover Washington, Jr. and singer Bill Withers. Washington wrote the music for the song with his partner Bill Salter before Withers added lyrics.

Washington and Withers first met when Withers went in to record his vocals. They were rarely together when they recorded the song, and they never got to know each other very well.

The song expresses a deep connection between a couple. No matter what happens, they can get through it together.

Here are the lyrics to the song.

I see the crystal raindrops fall
And see the beauty of it all
Is when the sun comes shining through
To make those rainbows in my mind
When I think of you some time
And I want to spend some time with you

Just the two of us
We can make it if we try
Just the two of us
Just the two of us
Building castles in the sky
Just the two of us
You and I

We look for love, no time for tears
Wasted water’s all that is
And it don’t make no flowers grow
Good things might come to those who wait
Not to those who wait too late
We got to go for all we know

I hear the crystal raindrops fall
On the window down the hall
And it becomes the morning dew
Darling, when the morning comes
And I see the morning sun
I want to be the one with you

Just the two of us
We can make it if we try
Just the two of us, just
(Just the two of us)
Just the two of us
Building big castles way up high
Just the two of us
You and I

(Just the two of us)
(We can make it, just the two of us)
(Just the two of us)

And for honorable mention, there’s this:

The Two of Us: Ben

This is a slightly weird take on Jim Adams’ challenge to write about a song which includes the lyrics, Couple/Together/Us.  The 1972 song (and the film it was the theme for) Ben, is along those lines.  It is a song about the relationship between a boy and a rat.  The film was the sequel to the 1971 horror flick, Willard.  The song on the Motown label reached Number One in the US, and 7th in the UK.  It also won a Golden Globe.

Ben, the two of us need look no more
We both found what we were looking for
With a friend to call my own
I’ll never be alone, and you, my friend, will see
You’ve got a friend in me
Ben, you’re always running here and there
You feel you’re not wanted anywhere
If you ever look behind and don’t like what you find
There’s something you should know, you’ve got a place to go
I used to say I and me, now it’s us, now it’s we
I used to say I and me, now it’s us, now it’s we
Ben most people would turn you away
I don’t listen to a word they say
They don’t see you as I do
I wish they would try to’
I’m sure they’d think again if they had a friend like Ben
A friend like Ben

Today, I am listening ‘Duniya’ by Akhil and Dhvani Bhanushali. It is a very beautiful love song. Its lyrics are also beautiful. Kriti Sanon is looking beautiful in the video. If you don’t know, this song is remake of ‘Khaab’ which is also sung by Akhil. Though I am not a fan of remix and … Continue reading What I am listening today
